Career Opportunities at Alameda Middle School

At Alameda we pride ourselves on ensuring our pupils have opportunities to engage with different career opportunities throughout Key Stage 3.

The careers programme involves students being introduced to a wide range of lessons, which give students the opportunity to view, learn and engage with various different career paths. This includes learning about various qualifications required, career prospects, salaries etc. Students are able to assess their own likes and dislikes with regards to what kind of career would be suitable for them. The following areas are covered in our careers programme:

Lesson 1	To identify subjects which subjects the pupils are good at and enjoy. Identify links between between activities and careers. Link interests and qualities individuals have to careers.
Lesson 2	To identify different career paths and careers available. Understand and show links between personality and career choice
Lesson 3	To understand cost of living, with budgeting, for how a wage is important. Consider cost of living and what is a luxury and necessity.
Lesson 4	To look at various different STEM jobs available.
Lesson 5	To understand how different skills and working hours relate to salary. Know the roles for different jobs.
Lesson 6	To create a lifestyle and budget which fits a given job role. To practice numeracy skills. Consider how to balance work and leisure time to create a healthy lifestyle.
Lesson 7	Consider how to balance work and leisure time to create a healthy lifestyle. How career and lifestyle could be affected by unexpected events (good or bad)
Lesson 8	To use Planitplus careers website to see what individuals may be suited to.

How do we measure and assess the impact of the careers programme on pupils?

Before the start of the units, students are asked to rate their level of knowledge regarding careers, where they see themselves going and how to achieve these steps. By the end of the unit, we then ask the students again, which we can measure what they might be interested in.

All pupils in Year 8 study a unit on careers as part of their Values lessons. They also have the opportunity to visit the “Skills Show” at the NEC.

We always welcome the opportunity for local colleges and organisations to come into school and discuss with our pupils their future career opportunities.
